Wound Rupture

Wound rupture refers to a significant breakdown of a surgical wound after closure. In abdominal surgery, rupture may involve superficial layers or the deeper fascial layer, and can progress to evisceration in extreme cases. It is associated with increased morbidity, prolonged hospitalization, and often the need for urgent reoperation. Risk factors include infection, increased intra-abdominal pressure, poor tissue quality, and technical issues such as inadequate approximation or excessive tension. Preventive strategies emphasize meticulous fascial closure, infection control, and optimization of patient factors where possible.
